Build Quality
Back to: Menu • Introduction
Sigma has a long tradition in the large aperture tele zoom lens arena. The series started with the AF 70-210mm f/2.8 back in the late 80s and they’ve recently released the 4th generation – the Sigma AF 70-200mm f/2.8 EX HSM APO DG macro. This latest incarnation features an improved close focus range down to a max. object magnification of 1:3.5 (1m @ 200mm). In absolute terms this may not be impressive but it is unique within this class. The lens is part of Sigma’s professional grade EX (“Excellence”) series and Sigma is also bold enough to go a comparatively high pricing – at around 850€/US$ it is only marginally cheaper than the comparable genuine manufacturer offers by Canon and Nikon. It is a full format lens and when used on an APS-C DSLR its field-of-view is equivalent to a classic 105-300mm lens.
Materials
The build quality of this EX lens is simply stellar. It is made of combination of high quality metal and plastic part and it feels very professional.
Sigma applied the typical Sigma EX crinkle finish on this lens.
Zoom Ring
Zoom ring operates smoothly on this lens. The physical dimension of this lens does not change when you zoom.
Focusing
The focusing ring also operates very smoothly. The filter thread does not rotate on this lens and you can attach a polarizing filter easily.
This lens is compatible with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The HSM motor allows for fast, accurate and silent autofocusing mechanism.
This is an HSM lens which means it will autofocus when used with entry level Nikon DSLR such as Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D5000, D5100, D3000 and D3100.
Image Stabilization
There is no Optical Stabilization built into the lens.
Compatibility
Being a DG lens, this lens is compatible with both full frame and cropped sensor DSLR camera.
